Art Smith previews Reunion, a restaurant he’s opening in Chicago this fall

The chef says his southern specialties will be right at home in the Windy City

Art Smith, probably best known as the former chef of Oprah Winfrey, has a new restaurant planned for Chicago that he’s opening this fall. Reunion will be on Lake Michigan and feature menu items such as fried chicken, shrimp & grits, fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese, all with culinary touches from Smith and his team.

That might sound like a Southern restaurant, but in this video Smith insists that Chicago is actually a very southern city.

Smith is speaking to Restaurant Hospitality from the Sawgrass Marriot Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., where he created a pop-up preview of Reunion for attendees of the Players golf championship.

In addition to Reunion, Smith also owns and operates Blue Door Kitchen & Garden in Chicago, Southern Art and Bourbon Bar in Atlanta, Art Bird & Whiskey Bar in Grand Central Terminal in New York City, and Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Smith says that over the course of the pandemic he has served 42 tons of fried chicken at the Disney World property.
