Best Sandwiches in America 2017: BBQ

This year’s Best Sandwiches prove that chefs around the country continue to push the boundaries of the hand-held favorite. See all the winners >>

Winner: The Sloppy Pig

Restaurant: Front Range Barbeque, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Units: 1

Creator: Chef Brian Fortinberry

Price: $13.95

Food cost: $3.49

Ingredients: Smoked pork butt, kielbasa, bacon, spicy cole slaw, smoked cheddar cheese, sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce, fried onion straws, pickles and a sweet potato bun.

What makes it special: This mountainous sandwich was once only a daily special, but it became so popular that it was eventually added to the permanent menu. Fortinberry called it “a big, sloppy sandwich, all about the pig.”

What others are saying: The Sloppy Pig had a moment of fame when it was featured on the Food Network program “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” hosted by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. The show’s website calls Front Range “your best local source for some real BBQ. ... It’s one of the most legitimate smokehouses across the entire country as far as we’re concerned.” Last year, the Colorado Springs Independent named Front Range the best barbecue restaurant in the city.
