It’s not surprising to see the work of street artists and other local artists incorporated into casual restaurant interiors. Take a look at some of the best examples.
Izakaya-Midtown, a Japanese gastropub in Houston, features murals created by local tattoo artist Catfish Perez. The restaurant’s interior, by Schooley Design, balances the traditional izakaya den (a Japanese drinking establishment) with the metamodern aesthetic that closes distances between cultures and reflects today’s global palate.
A hipster Gandhi is the focus of the large-scale mural by street artist Alex Cherry that sets the dining scene at Badmaash Indian gastropub in Los Angeles. The restaurant, decorated with old Bollywood movie posters, features culinary mashups like Chili Cheese Naan and Chicken Tikka Poutine. Owner Nakul Mahendro collaborated with the artist to create the mural, featuring three Gandhis, along the restaurant’s mezzanine walls.
In San Francisco, Bar Crudo co-owners Mike Selvera and his brother Tim are friends with artist Kelly Tunstall, who created the restaurant’s custom mural. Tunstall’s whimsical wall paintings of mermaids and submarines mirror Bar Crudo’s maritime theme and playful menu.
The new F. Pigalle in Las Vegas boasts a massive mural (55 feet long and 7 feet high) by local artist Pete Castro, also known as CastroART. The mural plays off Quartier Pigalle in Paris, home to the Moulin Rouge dancers, where a succession of red windmills have topped the theater since 1889.
The nautical-themed Chesapeake & Maine, set to open in February 2016 in Rehoboth Beach, DE, features fresh seafood shipped directly from Maine and the Chesapeake Bay. Sam Calagione, founder and president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, spent his summers in Dogfish Head, ME, and created the restaurant as a tribute to those memories. He commissioned his friend, visual artist Jon Langford (formerly a member of the British punk rock band, The Mekons), to create nautical interpretations of musical artists anchoring the restaurant’s play list, including Billie Holiday (pictured here) and Miles Davis.

Large-scale photographic glass art graces the entrance at Bel Air Bar + Grill, an L.A. spot offering California cuisine in a bistro setting. Amanda Weil of Weil Studio created the flowery images that blend with the building’s design.

Owners Dalton Wilson and Bryce Krausman came across Pamela Nielsen’s artwork several years ago, and have incorporated it into the interior at DW Bistro in Las Vegas. The menu is inspired by a meeting of Jamaican and New Mexico flavors, and Nielsen’s originals and prints capture the spirit and tone of the restaurant.
The old-world British pub feeling of Chauhan Ale & Masala House in Nashville is enhanced by a hand-laid peacock feather wall. The modern pub serves Indian cuisine and cocktails. The wall was created by designer London Parfitt, who teamed up with local architect Barry Brechak. The peacock is the national bird of India, and Parfitt’s peacock feather wall—about 6,000 feathers in all—is a modern nod to Indian culture.
Artist Danny Mateo’s scenic murals can be seen at two of Brooke Williamson’s and Nick Roberts’ L.A. restaurants—Playa Provisions and Hudson House. The mural at Playa Provisions in Playa del Rey offers a vintage view of the neighborhood. Mateo met the chefs while working as a front-of-the-house employee, and later painted murals for the two restaurants.
Shea, Inc. created the interior at Eastside, a brasserie serving new spins on American classics in Minneapolis. Mural artist Drew Peterson was commissioned to create a mural for the flex dining space, which can be partitioned off by a rolling garage door for private dining, or opened to the rest of the dining room when needed. Peterson’s mural spreads over eight panels.
The design at Tacos Tu Madre in L.A. is modern and vibrant, with an exterior Day of the Dead-inspired mural and The Art of Chase interior artwork.
