Pastry chef Elaine Townsend has an interesting take on a yule log for the holiday crowds at this Chicago spot. She combines coconut, almond and crushed Goya Maria cookies — the elements of Bolo Menino, a Macanese cake — into a sponge cake. The cake is then filled, rolled and frosted to resemble the traditional yule log. Townsend finishes the dessert with handmade pieces of dark chocolate that resemble tree bark, white chocolate “snow” and candied rosemary.
The chain added multiple menu items for the holiday season including peppermint mocha ice cream and hot chocolate ice cream. Both flavors are also available as an affogato, a new offering, as well as a scoop, NitroShake, ice cream sandwich, Creation and Bubble Waffle ice cream. The new treats are available through Jan. 15. Creamistry is based in Irvine, Calif., and has more than 55 shops.
As an option for those who want to enjoy an easy holiday meal at home, Mimi’s is offering a Ham Feast that serves up to 10 people. This contemporary Mexican restaurant, with three locations in New York, will celebrate with a tribute to Oaxaca, a southern state in Mexico known for its mole sauces, from Dec. 19 to 30. During the festivities, chef Roberto Santibañez will feature several menu items inspired by his grandmother’s recipes. The dishes will highlight three different kinds of Oaxacan mole: Verde, Amarillo and Coloradito. Fonda has also partnered with tequila brand DeLeón Tequila to offer three holiday cocktails through Dec. 30. A dollar from every holiday cocktail sold will support Project Paz with its efforts to help families who lost their homes during the two earthquakes that struck Mexico last year.
The quick-service chain currently offers the Oreo Hot Cocoa Blizzard Treat and the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard Treat on its menu as seasonal limited-time offers. Dairy Queen, based in Minneapolis, has over 6,800 units.
