Ole & Steen opened its first United States location in New York City in late January. In addition to its offerings of traditional Danish breads and pastries, the bakery serves savory items like smørrebrød, or open-faced rye sandwiches, on its all-day menu. One option, pictured at the bottom, is topped with blackcurrant-marinated herring, pickled pearl onion, cream cheese, crispy buckwheat and beet powder, served on carrot rye bread. The original name of the chain, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, is Lagkagehuset, but it was rebranded as Ole & Steen in English-speaking countries after founders Ole Kristoffersen and Steen Skallebaek expanded it to the U.K. The new U.S. unit is the brand’s 100th store opening.
